Residencies are offered to writers whose work demonstrates an interest in the integration of the perspectives of the humanities, arts, and sciences in ways that recognize community values. Three single residencies are offered each year, in January, April, and November. Residents are provided with housing and a stipend toward food costs. There are weekly opportunities for residents to interact with the local community.

An alternative arts space in San Francisco, Intersection has long-term studio residencies for writers, a composer, a dance group, and a theater group. Resident artists are involved in the creation as well as exhibition of work.
The LAB

The LAB offers residencies to visual, performing, media, and literary artists, traditionally in late summer or mid-winter. The duration of a residency depends on the artist's proposal and current LAB programming. Contact the organization for more information.

SFR&D's Artist-in-Residence Program uses art toinspire people to recycle more and conserve natural resources. The company provides selected local professional artists with the opportunity to make art from materials they gather from San Francisco's refuse, 24-hour access to a well-equipped studio, and an exhibit at the end of their residency.

Lux attracts nationally and internationally recognized artists to Southern California for its artist-in-residence program. Residents live and work on-site, and produce commissioned works inspired by the natural world. In addition, Lux fosters facilitates opportunities for active dialogue between visitors and resident artists.

Soaring Gardens Artists' Retreat, in beautiful dairy country near Laceyville, Pennsylvania, provides 3-6-week residencies to visual artists, writers, and composers between May and September. The Trust particularly encourages applications from emerging women artists. Artists are encouraged to apply in groups of 2 or 3.

Villa Aurora

Villa Aurora is operated by sister German and U.S. organizations. The Los Angeles program accepts up to 16 writers, visual artists, photographers, art historians, and filmmakers from Europe annually for 3-month residencies. In Berlin, 3-month residencies are awarded each year in literature, music composition, and film to 12 young (up to 40 years old) writers and artists living and working in Germany; 2 artists working together may share one grant. Visual artists are accepted by invitation only; students are not eligible.
